Yeah. The Kind of Fighters contest was a spinoff to an event in one of the games in the other series that spawned it's own separate thing.
That's why I noticed the anime movie OAV had a bunch of similar seeming characters to the KoF games.
The older one came first. I think I forget where but on the official game site or someplace (because it was awhile back) it said that they might be on alternate timelines. I think was what it had said.
